Karen apparently wanted to have her own children really badly. This was a huge factor in the failure of their marriage as Burris actually underwent vasectomy years before they met! It was a complete surprise to Karen as Tom never mentioned to her. The first time she learned about it was shortly before their wedding.

Calling Off The Wedding
Karen wanted to have children more than anything else in the world and she decided to cancel the wedding. When she delivered the news to her mother, Agnes scolded her and told her to proceed with the wedding. According to her, it would be shameful to call it off when their friends and family members have already planned to attend the ceremony. “The invitations have gone out. There are reporters and photographers coming. People magazine is going to be there. The wedding is on, and you will walk down that aisle,” she told her daughter, “You made your bed, Karen. Now you’ll have to lay in it.”
