Curtis Mayfield, a civil rights activist and singer of big band music, was a member of the Impressions. Born in Chicago, he started singing as part of a gospel choir. When he met Jerry Butler, a fellow artist, Mayfield, joined the Impressions. Due to the political consciousness of his songs, he helped lead the Civil Rights Movement. His album ‘People Get Ready’ was listed on Rolling Stone’s Greatest All-Time Songs as #24. He directed Super Fly as well.
