Before whaling was banned in several countries, people used to catch and kill whales to get their fats and other by-products, including the ambergris. These substances were used by people working in the industry to produce things such as machine oils, soap, pencils, and candles. Because of all the uncontrolled whaling, people had done, sperm whales became endangered, which led the government to a decision to ban such activity.
