One thing is super clear, Mark Harmon was born to play Leroy Jethro Gibbs. However Donald P. Bellisario wasn’t convinved. At the time, Bellisario imagined Gibbs would have a “flinty type with a strong sense of honor and respect for the military.” He didn’t think this sounded like Harmon. His opinion immediately changed when he saw Harmon on The West Wing as Secret Service Agent Simon Donovan. Even the co-executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson said, “We all looked at that work. And everybody said, ‘He’s Gibbs.'”

The Chilean-American actress Cote de Pablo wanted to portray a proper Israeli so she hired a language coach to help out. Pablo said this of the process, “When I learn it, I learn it like a prayer, chanting it for a while. I have a good ear for language and, truthfully, I picked up the language pretty fast.” She certainly had us convinced.
