Many wildlife experts have seen a number of examples of mothers making huge sacrafices to save their babies. It was unclear if this particular mother would do that or not.

Strong Current
To be fair, there were very harsh conditions that made this a very difficult situation for the mother bear. She struggeled to hold onto her cubs, but the lake was freezing and had a strong current. So, once the current pulled the cubs away form her, she was unable to help and had to leave them behind to save herself.
