McDermott was married to Mary Jo Eustace when he started working on the TV movie, Mind Over Murder. It was here that he met co-star Tori Spelling and started their affair. Both of them divorced their respective partners and got married. Interestingly, McDermott later cheated on Spelling and she said on True Tori: “Dean and I met when we were both married to other people, so now that this has happened to me, I know a lot of people are like, ‘Well, karma’s a b*tch,’”. Well, she’s not exactly wrong…
