What Really Happens In The Land Down Under (Photos)

Published on 05/29/2017

If you haven’t been, you’re missing out on a land full of Kangaroos, Vegemite, Kuala Bears, Sharks, Snakes, and other ‘out of the ordinary’ natural wonders. Australia is home to the Aussie mates, the location of some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches, and it’s also known to have quite a whacky reputation. I mean after all, it’s the place where even seemingly harmless native creatures can (and sometimes do) severely harm people. On that note, you can go ahead and book your flight OR instead look at pictures which show the land down under’s true colors. Enjoy!

Sharks Up, Dude!

Surfing, cool. Sharks, dangerous. Put the two together, daredevil. Unless this is just a coincidence, I mean, he might not purposely be surfing with sharks. It happens. Not many people intentionally go swimming with sharks.

Sharks Up Man

The Monster Coconut Crab

A really tiny (basically miniature) sized garbage can? Or, the world’s largest crab? The answer: option number two. This in fact is a Monster Coconut Crab – the largest crab in all of Australia. Yes, it’s a real animal. This is not photoshop, folks.

Is It A Bird Is It A Plane No Its Uhh....

Explanation please

What Is That?

We’re not sure if this mate realizes he’s “Sky News” famous, but either way, look how close that shark is to him! Also, doesn’t he seem just a tad too calm?

Yeah You Hey.

What is that?

It’s Lunchtime

The reaction of when you want to take a picture of the biggest (probably hungry) alligator, but you can’t because its the gator’s lunchtime and you’re scared that “human” is on the menu. Let’s hope this isn’t the case!

Yeah No.

Say Cheese

When In Australia

If we’re not mistaken, there’s no law that says you must travel from one place to another using a certain kind of vehicle, or with or without an animal. So, why not go to the grocery store on your bright blue Scooter with your pet sheep?

Washed Up In A Park

Picture this: you’re enjoying your post-lunch stroll, the sun is out, sky is blue, and you stumble upon this large reptile. Friendly or not, we’re running the other way.

Washed Up

Umm…

Quite possibly the most confusing/disturbing picture we’ve seen in awhile, or ever for that matter. At first glance, doesn’t it look like a man who’s taking a nap while wearing a shark costume? We’ll let you ponder on that.

Welp

Umm….

No Thank You

This long slithery snake guy may or may not be harmless, but I’d rather not come home to a snake chilling on my front door. We have the heebeegeebees just thinking about it.

Warm Welcome

No Thank You

Don’t Let The Size Fool You

One bite from this tiny (but deadly) venmomous snake and yeah, let’s just say it won’t end well at all. This little creature contains enough venom to kill not one, but several humans. So really, the debate is over, size doesn’t matter.

Mother Earth In Her Natural Habitat

I think we can all agree that from a distance, this (massive) forest fire is pretty cool looking, how different shades of orange beautifully light up the sky. Let’s keep our distance, the closer we get, the less prettier it becomes.

Uhh

Mother Earth

Nooooooo!

When you reach for the toilet paper and discover there’s an eight-legged furry creature stuck to the toilet paper roll. Excuse me Mr. Spider, but could you please get the you know what off?!

NOOOO!

Hey Ma!

Ha! While the cow probably didn’t mean to photobomb this picture, nor does he even know what a photobomb is, the smile on his face is too funny! In fact, the smile is too good that it almost looks like he knew exactly what he was doing. Interesting…

The Ultimate Photobomb

Hey Ma!

It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane…

Certainly not a bird and certainly not a plane, even though its (wide) wing span resembles the wings of a plane. Yes folks, this is a bat, a very (very) large bat!

Bat Toddler

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, oh wait

That’s One Too Many Spiders

It’s hard to focus on what these creepy eight-legged crawlers are situated on, but whatever this is I’d like to stay far far away from it.

“Um, excuse me Mr. Ostrich man, could you please scoot a little to the left, a little more, keep going, more, yup perfect.” (He’s feet away, nowhere near the camera lens).

Well hello there

What? I Was Hungry.

A confusing picture for two reasons: 1) the dog’s not-so innocent face is beyond precious, and 2) where’s the other half of the shark? Actually on second thought, we don’t want to know the answer to question number two.

Crikey!

The beloved Steve Irwin, or more commonly known as “The Crocodile Hunter”, was Australia’s most famous nature expert. His passion for crocodiles was explainable (literally). This picture shows Irwin happily in his natural habitat with and his lovely daughter Bindi.

Some people take their love for beetles to an unthinkable level, just like this Aussie fella. While we certainly don’t feel the same way, because eww, we understand that everyone is different!

Either this Aussie just hit the jackpot at the local carnival. Or, he just really (and we mean really) likes all types of stuffed animals.

The Australian Ocean Life

As Australia is an island continent, every state (excluding the Northern Territory and the ACT) is completely surrounded by Ocean waters. And, within these ocean waters there’s a vast variety of ocean life (plants/animals/organisms), one being the jellyfish. And from the looks of this photo, it sure seems like Jellyfish are a very prevalent aquatic animal within the oceans of Australia.

Crikey! We’ve encouraged an Ixodes Holocyclus, or more commonly known as the Australian paralysis tick. Fun fact: out of all 75 species, the Ixodes Holocyclus is believed to be the most medically important type of Australian tic.

Stonefish Or Reef?

Camouflaging at it’s finest. Stonefish are actually master camouflagers, perfectly blending with their preferred habitat which is coral and rocky reefs.

Flush, Flush, Flush

The act of flushing goes hand-in-hand with going to the bathroom, or at least it does for majority of people. But what do you do in the case of the picture? Flushing this big snake down the toilet will for sure clog it.

There’s a time and place for everything, except for a game of good-old hide-and-go-seek.

Except we don’t think there’s any sort of affection going on in this picture. Unless their way of showing affection is by eating one another.

Hiking is a great outdoor activity, especially in Australia where the views will leave you speechless. Regardless of where you decide to partake in this activity, make sure to always step and climb with caution — exhibit A (see photo).

We really hope that there’s no people in whatever building/room this snake just busted through. He’s on quite the mission, so it seems.

Taking A Beach Day

The day in the life of an Aussie shark has got to be exhausting. So, just like humans, taking a break (at the beach) is necessary for sharks as well.

Truth Or Dare?

Something this large, wide, and foreign looking should most likely not be touched. And for those who do touch this unknown thing, well, we’re not exactly sure what happens next.

In Other News

Evidently having an enormous shark, washed up on shore, is a common sighting for Aussies. We say this simply because of what’s written in the news headlines, the features news headlines that is.

Fly Central

Do you think this mate knows that his t-shirt is completely covered with tiny little (gross) bugs? And if he doesn’t, then he has a messy surprise coming his way.

Snakes On A Plane, Literally

Imagine how terrifying it would be if you were on this flight and you look out the window and see a snake just hanging out on one of the wings. Okay keep imagining that, but now picture that you’re watching the 2006 film Snakes On a Plane. Sounds like a nightmare!

Looks cute, right? Not when you find out that the Blue-ringed octopus is actually one of the world’s most venomous marine animals – GULP. Even though they’re small, they are a seriously deadly animal.

Yes, we get it. These are just animals in their natural habitat, doing whatever they need to in order to survive. But it doesn’t mean we have to like it anymore.

Electric Bill

This is one of those cases where you don’t care what your electric bill is anymore. Do we really need to explain why? Or are you actually going to clean up all the spiders just to save money? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Hangry

You know the saying, “hangry”? You’ve probably heard it but maybe you didn’t know what it meant. Don’t worry, this picture totally sums it up. It’s when you’re hungry and the more hungry you get, the more angry you are. Ergo, hangry. Although the picture proves it best.

Hole In One

Now I don’t know much about golf but I’m pretty sure that this is one “hole in one” no one ever wants to get. Or hey, it’s probably more likely that you’ll never get the ball in hole. So either way, lose-lose.

Nessie

Not gonna lie, this kind of looks like Nessie, the loch ness monster. Right? Or maybe it’s just a shark, that’s probably more likely. But hey, let dreamers be dreamers.

Cute, But Yet

We’ll admit it, the cone snail is pretty darn cute. However as far as sea snails go, this one is extremely venomous. Without warning, they can sting you and yes, their stings can be fatal.

So, This Happened

While this is not a common occurrence for most of us, it is in Australia. We suppose a predator is doing what it does best, hunting. We’re just lucky we weren’t the prey.

Yeah, this hilarious meme pretty much sums up all of Australia in a matter of a sentence. I think we’ve already established that by now.

Camouflage

Just look at this stonefish, it’s totally well-camouflaged. It just looks like a lump of coral or maybe even an encrusted rock. However it actually has spines in the dorsal fin which can then inject a highly toxic venom which causes seriously intense pain and may lead to death.
