Every now and then, an iconic movie is released that explodes into a blockbusting hit. But sometimes, a movie is so iconic that it earns a special status as a cult classic. These feel-good films offer pure movie-magic and have the power to change your day. That’s why they often have a fiercely devoted audience. Now this list was extremely difficult to compile, considering the sheer amount of iconic movies out there, but we focused on the coming-of-age movies that became ingrained in our culture. We promise, these movies need to be seen once. And once you’ve seen them, you’ll want to watch them over and over again.
Breakfast Club
This cult-classic features five high school students from different walks of life. One Saturday they are all forced to endure a detention day together under the watchful eye of a power-hungry principal, played by Paul Gleason. During the detention each character has the chance to tell their story, from the rebel of the group, (Judd Nelson), to the princess Claire (Molly Ringwald), the jock Andrew (Emilio Estevez), the outcast Allison (Ally Sheedy) and the brainy Brian (Anthony Michael Hall). At the end of a long eye-opening day, they are all forced to see each other differently, and wonder if school will ever be the same again.
Mean Girls
This classic coming-of-age drama has earned its status as an instant cult hit for so many reasons and even started a vocabulary of it’s own. The movie stars the teenage Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) who moves to a suburb of Illinois, after being educated in Africa. When she enrolls in a new public high school, she has no idea what she was letting herself in for. From day one she has to navigate her way through the cruel the rules of popularity, tightly formed cliques and student divides. When she finds herself in an elite clique dubbed “the Plastics,” and makes the mistake of falling for the ex-boyfriend of Regina George, the alpha-plastic of the group, she soon realizes how shallow her new ‘friends’ can become.
Clueless
The classic 90s chick flick stars Alicia Silverstone and is the perfect-go-to movie for any binge-session. Clueless welcomes you into the fabulous, glamorous and popular world of Cher (Alicia Silverstone) who has everything going for her. She lives in a Beverley Hills mansion and is socially successful in high school, and even has time to match make her teachers and friends. Cruel Intentions
Cruel Intentions invites us into the elite world of the upper west side in New York. While everyone is concerned with keeping up appearances and reputations, including the wealthy and popular teenager Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar), we soon learn that this world is filled with a web of deceit, lies, revenge and cruel intentions. As the drama unfolds, it seems that everyone, including Kathryn’s step-brother, Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon) and the naive Cecile (Selma Blair) are part of a bigger game.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Ferris Bueller became a cult hit that helped launch the epic career of Matthew Broderick. In the movie, Ferris schooled us all in how to cut class and take a sick day in style. After calling in sick, Ferris convinces his friend Cameron Frye to take his dad’s prized 1961 Ferrari, lies to collect his girlfriend Sloane from school and embarks on an unforgettable and nail-biting adventure through the streets of Chicago.
